Colour and Gloss Measurement of Industrial Paint & Coatings
Spectrophotometers and Gloss Meters for Construction Equipment, Marine Coatings, Heat Resistant Coatings, Aviation Coatings, Coil Coating, and more.
Industrial paints & coatings are applied to a vast range of surfaces and components typically providing some function ahead of more decorative paints. Industrial coatings provide corrosion resistance or protection from wear and tear or light, can be resistant to decay, or provide some other mechanical benefit. Therefore, for such products, visual appearance is not the primary characteristic but consistent and accurate colour is still important for the customer perception of quality or brand.
Konica Minolta measuring instruments offer a solution for accurate colour of industrial paint and coating applications, from raw materials to finished products. Colour measurement allows organisations to implement data driven process control and quality control procedures that improves output consistency, saving time and waste. Whether for internal controls, colour specification and communication with your supply chain, colour matching or remaking from a database of colours, our software solutions are supported by an experienced team who can help you to accurately specify, produce, and communicate colour, even accounting for non-colour related properties.
Digital colour and appearance data can be used to expedite the supply process, greatly improving a paint producer's ability to react to the market by reducing the risks and costs associated with producing, distributing, and maintaining physical standards.
The ability to offer a range of accurate colours or customise a product to the customer specification can be a powerful way to differentiate your products and meet or exceed customer expectation.
Colour measurement, applied when visiting with customers, agreeing specifications with suppliers, in paint and coating development laboratories, benchmarking industry competitors, or reporting for internal quality control programs, can build supply chain relationships based on quality, consistency, and reducing subjectivity from specification and approval.
Konica Minolta has a dedicated team of experts responsible for implementing, training, optimising, and customising systems for colour formulation and digital colour communication. Our experts can help your teams to establish digital colour standards and colour difference tolerances that you can share with your supply chain partners. You can leverage the experience of our application teams to quickly establish repeatable, best-practice processes for colour and appearance measurement and control.
Our benchtop spectrophotometers are manufactured to the highest standards, to provide you with accuracy and traceability alongside innovative features like a built-in ISO compliant gloss sensor or built in display and operator wizard. A portable spectrophotometer such as the CM-26dG is the perfect accompaniment to the process, allowing operators mobility and flexibility whilst maintaining traceability and industry leading inter model agreement with other instruments in the supply chain and integrating a 60-degree gloss sensor.
Through our partnership with Rhopoint Instruments, we offer a number of advanced gloss and appearance measurement solutions, including the innovative IQ glossmeters which measure DOI and Haze. Development teams can utilise the Rhopoint TAMS, a portable machine vision system, to inspect surfaces throughout the coating process, from surface preparation, primer, coats, and finishing.

Instruments
CM-36dG Benchtop Spectrophotometer
Benchtop spectrophotometer CM-36dG simultaneously measures colour and gloss to streamline your quality control workflow, reduce operator errors, and save on equipment and maintenance costs. Customers can check and adjust the CM-36dG during daily calibration to ensure that the instrument is in perfect condition.
CM-26dG Portable Spectrophotometer
The CM-26dG portable spectrophotometer offers unprecedented accuracy and inter-instrument agreement for superior colour communication throughout the supply chain. Two easily interchangeable measurement apertures and an integrated ISO 2813 compliant 60° gloss sensor greatly enhance the versatility of the device.
CM-M6 Multi-angle Spectrophotometer
Portable multi-angle spectrophotometer with 6 angles and double-path system. The CM-M6 is especially designed with a vertical orientation to simplify colour measurement of metallic and effect paints on small and curved samples which would typically be considered tricky.
CM-17d Portable Spectrophotometer
Portable instrument with vertical alignment and built in sample viewer camera that allows for precise positioning of measurement aperture. Measure with a 3mm or 8mm aperture dependent on the sample and view colour data either on the built in display or in colour data software.
Applications
Measurement of Industrial Paints
A modern digital colour data system can help an organisation to measure and specify the colour and appearance of paints onsite with customers, and maintain digital standards, recipes, approval processes and quality control records. Our experienced teams can help you to design and implement a solution, and ensure that it remains accurate and traceable.
Measurement of Colour on Painted Objects
The appearance of painted objects can be easily measured on-site with a portable spectrophotometer like the CM-700d, or where necessitated by the coating, the multiangle CM-M6.
Colour measuring instruments can be used for colour management of products performing matching or QC against local or global colour databases. Colour data simplifies quality control tasks, removing subjectivity and improving throughput.
By communicating colour clearly and accurately with suppliers and customers organisations can greatly improve he perceived value of their products.
Visual Assessment of Paint with a Light Booth
The objective of colour measurement is to manfucature products that are visually appealing and cohesive to the human observer. Therefore, visual assessment will always be a part of the colour production process. Instruments allow organisations to report and communicate traceable colour data, accurately and without subjectivity, but the product still needs to be approved by a customer's eye. Rely on one of our light cabinets and evaluate colours under controlled lighting conditions.
